This week's story is The Little Mermaid, the original version by Hans Christian Andersen published in 1836. It is a love story between two people from very different worlds with a sad ending. The story follows the journey of a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea as a mermaid to gain a human soul for the love of her life.

We also compare this version to Disney's The Little Mermaid movie version and discuss how the original version was a feminist tale of a little girl taking charge of her destiny while going after what she wants and making her life decisions. Disney's disappointing narrative gives power to men in the story and pits women against each other.
